600 Homes In Northern Ireland Left Without Water

Hundreds of people living in Northern Ireland have been left without water following a burst pipe.

The incident resulted in around 600 houses in County Tyrone, particularly Ardstraw, Omagh, Sion Mills, Newtonstewart and Victoria Bridge, not having access to water.

NI Water, which is responsible for the water supply, was made aware of the problem on Saturday morning (May 4th) and responded quickly to carry out repairs urgently.

A spokesperson for the organisation stated: “Due to the nature and location of the burst, the repair proved extremely difficult and has failed several times following repair.”

As a result, more work was conducted the following day to enable customers to access water in their homes as soon as they could. Workmen remained on site to keep an eye on the situation and fix any further issues that arose.

The spokesperson went on to apologise to residents “for the inconvenience we know this has caused”.

Last month, the water provider showed its support for the annual Water Saving Week (April 29th to May 3rd) by giving customers tips on how they can reduce their water usage.

It suggested turning the tap off when brushing teeth, as a running tap uses up to six litres of water per minute. The organisation also suggested cutting down shower time by one minute – this small change could mean you save 10,000 litres of water a year.

NI Water also recommended filling washing machines instead of using half-load programmes; washing cars with a bucket and sponge instead of a hose; and only filling the kettle with as much water as needed.

“By making small, mindful changes to our daily habits, we can all do our part to save more water now to help sustain it for our future generation of water users,” Anna Killen, environmental learning and outreach officer at NI Water, stated.
