Thousands of Brits around the country were reminded of the importance of saving water earlier this month on National Refill Day.

The initiative has been introduced by environmental campaign charity City to Sea, with the intention of reducing reliance on plastic bottles.

The event, which took part on Wednesday (June 19th), encouraged the British public to refill their bottles of water instead of purchasing plastic ones that cannot be recycled.

A spokesperson for the campaign stated: “We want to create a new social norm for refilling on the go – saving us money, keeping us hydrated and preventing millions of single-use plastic bottles at source.”

It claims that nearly half of the 7.7 billion plastic bottles used every year in the UK are not recycled, and 15 million end up on landfill or as litter every day.

Network Rail demonstrated its support of the initiative and openly encourages passengers to refill their bottles from its free water fountains.

The organisation introduced these at London Charing Cross in February 2018, and claims the fountains have saved over 100,000 water bottles from going to landfill every month as a result.

Network Rail has now fitted fountains in 19 of the country’s largest train stations in a bid to reach its target of saving two million water bottles by 2020.

To find out where you can fill up your bottles with free water, you can download City to Sea’s Refill App, which connects the user to more than 21,000 refill stations around Britain.
