Many SMEs Do Not Know About Switching Water Company

There needs to be more awareness about being able to switch water company among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), as many are still in the dark about changing supplier.

This is according to the Consumer Council of Water (CCWater), which revealed just 36 per cent of SMEs thought they could change their water and wastewater retail service provider in February 2019.

In addition to this, only 29 per cent realised they could negotiate a better service with a water company. This is despite having been able to switch or discuss plans since April 2017.

Head of policy and research at CCWater Mike Keil said: “Small businesses have not been empowered with the knowledge and tools they need to punish poor service and enjoy the potential benefits of switching or re-negotiating.”

He went on to say that many small businesses “feel they are being overlooked by retailers”, which in turn, leads to them missing out on the best tariffs.

Medium-sized companies are more likely to be proactive than smaller enterprises, with 48 per cent of these firms saying they are going to look into switching in the next six months. This is compared with 39 per cent of small businesses, 32 per cent of microbusinesses, and 18 per cent of sole traders.

Since April 1st 2017, eligible businesses have been able to choose which company they want to supply their retail water services. By not being restricted to local providers, companies have been able to save the amount of water they have used, and subsequently, cut down on their bills.
