We all know that plastic pollution is a growing problem, but because single-use plastics – like water bottles – have become such a ubiquitous part of life, it’s now a challenge to get people to change their habits to be more environmentally conscious.
But that’s exactly what the Refill Initiative is doing, with volunteers keen to get everyone to drink more tap water.
Devon is one of the areas where the Refill campaign is in full flow, with the aim to get businesses to refill people’s reusable water bottles free of charge. But as well as getting businesses to participate, they need to raise awareness of where people can go to get water when they’re out and about.
Devon Live reported that the team of volunteers in the county will be having a launch event to raise awareness of the scheme and to get more people to think about carrying reusable bottles with them.
Melissa Harvey, from Community Action Groups Devon, told the publication that raising awareness of the scheme is one of the most important things.
“We know lots of businesses already offer this simple service, but research shows that people often feel embarrassed or cheeky for asking,” she explained. But by looking out for the Refill sticker, people will know that asking for a top up on their water bottle won’t be turned down.
According to Surfers Against Sewage, a plastic bottle can last for 450 years in a marine environment, while it’s estimated that there are 150 plastic bottles littering every mile of beach in the UK. If that’s not enough to make you want to turn away from single-use plastics, just think of the money you could save not buying bottled water.
